It’s the coldest time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and to avoid looking like a lost polar bear I’m turning towards my trusted mood board, also known as Instagram, for winter outfit inspiration. Turns out, it is completely possible to look chic AND stay warm at the same time. The solution is layering pretty knits under an oversized coat and relying on proper footwear. After seasons of sock boots and high heels, and thanks to influencer favourites Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta, the thick-soled boot style I wore in the ’90s is back for our relief (and horror, too). So forget about those stiletto heels and snug tailoring and embrace chunky comfort.

Kiitos Balenciagan ja Bottega Venetan, paksupohjaiset nilkkurit, joita pidin ala-asteella 90-luvulla ovat taas muodissa taaten mukavuutemme – ja kauhumme….
Vintage vibes and stirrup leggings

Beige comfort
This look starts with an oversize, full-length wool coat. Basically, you could wear whatever you fancy underneath and still look chic but if you’ve gotten comfortable with the most comfortable lockdown style – beige loungewear – then this is definitely the way to make it appropriate outside your sofa. // FIN: Tämän lookin perusta on ylisuuri, täyspitkä villakangastakki, sillä sen alle voi pukea lähes mitä vain ja näyttää silti tyylikkäältä. Knit vest over button-down over turtleneck
Now this is what I call layering! Three tops worn at once and doesn’t look ridiculous at all. While the focus in on the top part, it’s best to keep the bottom modest with skinny trousers and combat boots. Stick to monochrome for a classy vibe or go wild with colour. I could easily see this combo in glorious pastels. // FIN: Tässäpä kerrospukeutumista parhaimmillaan! Kolme yläosaa päällekkäin ei näytä ollenkaan niin älyttömältä kuin se saattaa kuulostaa. Koska huomio on vahvasti yläosassa, alaosa in hyvä pitää maltillisena kapeilla housuilla ja maihareilla. Pitäydy klassisessa mustavalkoisessa tai heittäydy värien kanssa villiksi. Jumper as a shawl
Another clever way of wearing three tops is to wear the third one over the coat. Again, a skin-hugging turtleneck is a true multitasker you can wear under your prettiest sleeveless summer dress and the jumper here works as a shawl. Pay attention to the gorgeous, muted and earthy colour palette. // FIN: Toinen kätevä tapa kolmen yläosan kerrostamiseen, on ylimmän kerroksen jättäminen takin päälle. Borrowed from grandparents
This combo borrows from both grandpa’s and grandma’s closets. An oversized wool blazer can hide all sorts of layers underneath and a pretty knit skirt can be worn with thermo tights without anyone knowing. Every part of this outfit seems mismatched and that is exactly the beauty of it. // FIN: Tässä kombinaatiossa lainataan sekä isoisän että isoäidin kaapeista. Ylisuuri villableiseri piilottaa alleen jos jonkinmoista lämmittävää kerrosta, ja suloisen, neulotun hameen alla voin vallan hyvin pitää thermosukkiksia. Tämän kokonaisuuden jokainen osa tuntuu järjettömän epäsopivalta, ja siinä sen nerokkuus piileekin.

A more classic approach to a menswear inspired wool blazer is to wear it with tweed shorts and a classic, white button-down. This outfit is great for those days when it’s not the coldest winter anymore but not quite spring yet. The double jacket effect
When one is not enough. And don’t worry about the jacket on top having shorter hem than the bottom one – it’s cool to see the hemline and different collar shapes go hand in hand.
