Happy New Year, friends! What could be a better start for 2019 than to get a proper look at Pantone’s color of the year. Promising to “embrace us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment”, Living Coral 16-1546 is exactly what we need in the middle of the dark and grey winter. This energetic and warm hue is polar opposite to the mysterious, blue-based Ultra Violet of 2018, as the color actually appears in our natural surroundings, making it feel inviting and comforting. According to Pantone, “Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.”

Metaphorically coral represents companionship, brotherhood and common consciousness, referring to coral reefs that grow by attaching to one another. It also draws our attention to self-awareness and encourages us to let go of our ego.

Living coral has already appeared in social media and catwalks alike, and I’m counting on it to be everywhere on the high street as well. Coral is an interesting color as it seems to flatter everyone. It’s especially stunning paired with blue tones, chocolate brown and white, but perhaps the most fashion-forward way to wear it this year is going tonal like in Temperley London (below). Marc Jacobs on the other hand made his coral dress feel fresh and exciting with ruby red accessories (above).

FIN: Hyvää uutta vuotta, ystävät! Mikä olisikaan parempi tapa aloittaa 2019, kuin tutustumalla Pantonen tämän vuoden väriin. “Lämmin ja hoitava syleily, joka tarjoaa turvaa ja hilpeyttä jatkuvasti muuttuvassa ympäristössämme”. Näin Pantone kiteytti vuoden 2019 värinsä, ja Living Coral 16-1546 onkin juuri se mitä tämän pimeän talven keskellä kaipaamme. Tämä lämmin ja energinen sävy on viime vuoden mystisen Ultra Violetin täysi vastakohta, sillä luonnossa esiintyvä korallin sävy tuntuu meistä turvalliselta ja tutulta. Pantonen mukaan Living Coral herättääkin ajatuksia luonnollisen ekosysteemimme eläväisistä koralliriutoista, joissa näyttäytyy kaleidoskoopin kaikki värit.

Vertauskuvallisesti koralli edustaa kumppanuutta, veljeyttä ja yhteistä omatuntoa viitaten koralliriuttoihin, jotka kasvavat yhdistymällä toisiinsa. Sävy kannustaa myös itsetutkiskeluun ja egosta luopumiseen.

Korallin sävyjä on spotattu jo syksyllä sosiaalisessa mediassa, sekä muun muassa Marc Jacobsin, Temperley Londonin ja Stine Goyan kevään 2019 kokoelmissa. Koralli sopii värinä lähes kaikille, erityisesti yhdistettynä sinisen sävyihin, tummanruskeaan tai valkoiseen. Tonaalipukeutuminen lienee kuitenkin vuoden 2019 trendikkäin tapa pukeutua myös koralliin.
