Here’s a little revelation: I’m getting married in ten days! The wedding planning has been somewhat chaotic and realizing my wedding outfit was missing “something blue” wasn’t helping at all. That’s when I came up with the idea of repurposing my old  and worn out latin dance heels to be my blue wedding shoes. Why? First, almost every bride buys new shoes for their wedding day. That’s a huge mistake. How often have you felt comfortable spending a whole day in brand new shoes? If you want to dance the night away without kicking off your heels you need to have gotten accustomed with them. Second, there’s no heels more comfortable than those made for dancing. Ballroom shoes are a serious contender when choosing your wedding shoes. If you are interested, these are my shoes.

So. That’s the story behind my decision to completely transform my old ballroom heels. It’s a shame I don’t have a before-picture, but just imagine how a pair of seven years old light beige satin shoes that have been worn in at least 200 times could look like! I took my shoes to a fabulous bridal shop Niinatar in Helsinki. They have their own dye studio where my shoes got a whole new life. The dark navy color hid away all wear and tear and gave a perfect base for my Miu Miu -inspired feathers and pearls.

FIN: Seuraa paljastus: menen kymmenen päivän kuluttua naimisiin! Häiden suunnittelu on ollut yhtä hässäkkää, eikä tilannetta yhtään helpottanut se, että asustani puuttui “jotakin sinistä”. Sitten sain ajatuksen vanhojen tanssikenkieni värjäämisestä ja koristelusta sinisiksi hääkengiksi. Mutta miksi halusin tärkeään päivään lähes hajoamispisteessä olevat kuluneet kengät? Siihen on kaksi syytä: ensinnäkin, moni morsian tekee virheen ostaessaan hääpäiväksi uudet kengät. Eihän kukaan jaksa seistä uusissa kengissä koko päivää, puhumattakaan pikkutunneille tanssimisesta. Toiseksi, ei ole olemassa yhtä mukavia korkokenkiä kuin tanssikengät. Erityisesti lattaritansseihin tehdyt kengät ovat muotoilultaan niin mukavat, että suosittelenkin kaikkia tulevia morsiamia katsastamaan alueensa tanssitarvikeliikkeet. Netistä tilatessa valikoima on toki laajempi, omat Supadancen kenkäni löytyvät esimerkiksi täältä Amazonilta. 

Olin aivan haltioitunut morsiusliike Niinattaren värjäämön palvelusta. Värjäämö loihti kuluneista kengistäni parissa päivässä kuin uudet. Tumma laivastonsininen häivytti kaikki kulumat kankaassa ja loi täydellisen pohjan Miu Miun inspiroimille höyhenkoristeille.

Here’s what you’ll need for the feather sandals:

• Pair of (old) heeled sandals. Textile upper is better for you can sew through the fabric. With leather / faux leather it’s more difficult and you might have to rely on glue only.
• Feather trim from a ribbon / craft shop. You’ll need approx. 15 cm for each shoe.
• Plastic pearls of different sizes from a craft shop.
• Super glue. Don’t glue your fingers! (For example UHU Power All Purpose Glue works well)
• Strong thread and a needle.
• Scissors

             Tarvikkeet:

• • Remmisandaalit, mielellään kangasta. Nahkaisiin on vaikeampi ommella, mutta toki liimallakin pysyy.
  • Höyhennauhaa noin 15 cm per kenkä.
  • Eri kokoisia liimattavia helmiä, esim. askarteluliikkeestä.
  • Superliimaa (esim. UHU Power)
  • karhunlankaa ja neula
  • sakset

These are similar to my the Supadance latin shoes

1. Measure the feather trim to cover the toe strap of your sandals.
2. Put a little dab of clear nail polish on both ends of the trim to avoid unraveling.
3. Either sew or glue the feather trim to the toe strap.
4. Glue on big pearls to the satin part of the trim.
5. Start glueing the pearls on the heels. You can make clear patterns or just glue randomly. Alternate with big and small pearls. I decided to follow the form of the heel and make clear lines. Make sure to work with both shoes at the same time. Don’t make one shoe completely ready before starting with the other one or you’ll end up with mismatched pair.
6. Let the glue dry for at least 12 hours (even if the tube says only 1 hour) before wearing your masterpiece.

1. Mittaa höyhennauha peittämään koko kengän varvasremmin.
2. Sivele väritöntä kynsilakkaa nauhan leikattuihin päihin jotta se ei lähde purkautumaan.
3. Ompele tai liimaa höyhennauha kiinni varvasremmiin.
4. Liimaa isompia helmiä höyhennauhan satiiniosaan.
5. Liimaa helmet korkoihin. Voit liimailla joko selkeitä kuvioita tai vapaasti sinne tänne. Työskentele molempien kenkien kanssa samanaikaisesti osio kerrallaan. Jos teet ensin toisen kengän kokonaan valmiiksi ennen toisen aloittamista, saatat saada kaksi täysin erinäköistä kenkää.
6. Anna liiman kuivua vähintään 12 tuntia ennen kenkien käyttämistä.

And voilá! With only 45€ spent on the alterations (30€ for the dye and 15€ for the embellishments) I got myself a pretty pair of something blue.
